Metamorphic Rock
Metamorphic Rocks are formed from igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been under a ton of pressure which causes them to heat up and change. Theses changes take place over hundreds of years. This usually happens when tectonic plates come together and the pressure of the plates squish the rock that is heated by hot magma below. They are called metamorphic rocks because they are rocks that have been morphed together.
Schist: Schist is found in the Piedmont region of Georgia and it's used for decorative rocks in gardens and flagstone for fire places and patios. Schist commonly splits into layers and is made of minerals like talc, graphite and chlorite.
Gneiss: Gneiss is found also in the Piedmont region of Georgia and is used for roads, curbs, countertops, and gravestone. Gneiss is made of layers that alternate in darker and lighter bands called gneiss banding. This happens because of high temperatures and pressures while it is forming.
Marble: Marble is another metamorphic rock found in north Georgia. It is used in construction, making sculptures and for decoration. It is very durable and was used to make the Taj Majal and Michelangelo's statue of David.
